Union Corruption Update: Go Directly To Jail

  • crime money steal embezzle 1The former business manager for a California local of the Plumbers Union was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for conspiracy and misappropriating labor union funds. His wife was also sentenced to three months in the pen for involvement in the same nine-year scheme. Federal prosecutors argued that the pair had illegally taken approximately $120,000 through checks and charges for unauthorized reimbursements, salary advances, and bonuses.
  • The President of the Production Workers Union local in Jersey City, New Jersey was sentenced to six months in prison for conspiring with another union officer to take unauthorized salary increases and bonuses after entering a guilty plea. His co-conspirator, the local’s Treasurer and Recording Secretary, received three years’ probation.
  • A former Michigan correctional officer faces federal felony embezzlement charges for allegedly embezzling funds from the chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police union for which he served as Treasurer. The alleged misappropriation of money is on the order of several thousand dollars, according to news reports.
