Labor Pains: Because Being in a Union can be Painful

More Department of Labor Filings Up…

We recently highlighted some new Department of Labor membership and financial filings showing the use of UFCW members’ money on PR smear campaigns and lavish hotel excursion for union bosses. Some more interesting numbers are up today:

  • The Teamsters union owes Bally’s in Las Vegas more than $500,000
  • UAW membership slipped by 20,000 in 2006 and decreased by 116,000 since 2004
  • The unions who most fervently avoid allowing employees to join via true elections added to their ranks, with SEIU claiming 70,000 new members and UNITE HERE tacking on about three thousand
  • Not surprisingly, AFSCME, which represents employees in the increasingly unionized public sector, added about ten thousand members
  • The Machinists lost about 7,000 members
