Labor Pains: Because Being in a Union can be Painful

LA Times Says Labor “Card-Checkmated” On EFCA

The Los Angeles Times reported on labor’s shortcomings on card check. The article said that labor unions have been “outmaneuvered” on what is supposed to be their top priority. A labor adviser who asked to remain anonymous admitted that they had been “outspent, outhustled, and outorganized.”

Even John Wilhelm, the embattled leader of UNITE HERE, said that EFCA was “severely challenged.” In yet another open disagreement, Wilhelm complained that Andy Stern and the SEIU had undermined their effectiveness by signaling openness to a compromise on the bill.

Despite their success, proponents of keeping the secret ballot should remain vigilant. Talks of compromise continue among Senate Democrats, which means anything, including card check, is still on the table.
