Labor Pains: Because Being in a Union can be Painful

Union Bosses Going Nuclear in the Carolinas

Executives at Progress Energy in the Carolinas are fighting a unionizing drive by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. I don’t really care how the employees there vote, as long as they’re informed. They can start by looking at the Center for Union Facts profile of IBEW, and the NLPC’s brief of IBEW embezzlement.

The notable thing: IBEW is actually seeking an honest-to-goodness election overseen by the NLRB. They’re been lobbying workers for a year, offering their perspective and making their case. Under the elections process, the company will have its say, and then the employees will have theirs at the voting booth.

There are a lot of union officials who could take a lesson in basic democracy from this IBEW local.
