Labor Pains: Because Being in a Union can be Painful

On The Waterfront writer Budd Schulberg dies

I suppose it’s a coincidence that Academy Award winning writer Budd Schulberg passed away on the same day that ten New York City union leaders were arrested on 29 counts of corruption, racketeering, bribery, fraud, and perjury. But it’s an odd coincidence.

Schulberg wrote the Academy Award winning screenplay for On The Waterfront after researching union corruption in Hoboken New Jersey’s Longshoreman’s unions. Schulberg wrote the film after befriending Rev. John Corridan, a Jesuit priest working to root out corruption in the International Longshoreman’s Union.
