It could be said about many unions these days, but this time it’s about the United Farm Workers and their attempt to hijack the secret ballot unionizing process. Money quote:
The union’s latest attempt to restore its influence among workers in the fields hit a roadblock this week when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed two bills that would have ended the secret ballot for union organizing elections. The new system would have installed a card-check system, equivalent to gathering signatures on a petition, making voting much simpler, but also allowing union organizers to influence the vote through manipulation and intimidation. The UFW claims that it needs that measure to offset the lack of enforcement of labor laws in California’s fields. The remedy for shoddy enforcement, however, ought not to be shoddy, and perhaps even corrupt, union administration.
