Labor Pains: Because Being in a Union can be Painful

News Roundup: “This is on the scale of a presidential campaign,” UAW takes a hit

A piece at Politico examines just how deep this fight is going on both sides. The head of Change to Win declared that “This is on the scale of a presidential campaign” and claims that there are more than 300,000 pro-labor Republicans in Pennsylvania who are upset at Specter.

More drama in SEIU, which last week was protested against by its own workers. According to the Los Angeles Times, an LA-based chapter of SEIU has filed a lawsuit against a former executive demanding restitution of $1.1 million dollars. It seems big spending isn’t limited to SEIU–last year the UAW expensed $98,775 on golf courses, $75,492 at casinos, and over $150,000 at resort conference centers.

In 2008, both the United Autoworkers and Teamsters report losing members.
