Labor Pains: Because Being in a Union can be Painful

EFCA: The Money’s in the Lobby

As we’ve noted, union bosses are lobbying and throwing cash at politicians in hopes of securing passage of the fantastically misnamed “Employee Free Choice Act.” The AP has more, with a piece on politicians pandering to union bosses and a sidebar explaining that 6 of the top 10 political donors are unions. The news service explains: “Labor unions hold six of the top 10 positions in the Center for Responsive Politics’ list of top political donors to federal candidates and political parties since the 1989-90 election cycle, underscoring their importance to the Democratic Party.” The rankings:

1. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees_ $30,671,426
2. National Education Association — $21,116,383
6. International Brotherhood of Teamsters — $18,858,733
7. International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers — $18,394,547
9. Service Employees International Union — $17,647,346
10. Communications Workers of America — $17,597,372
